“ආකලන”: Monthly departmental event on POSTIVE THINKING for academic and non- academic staff members of the Department of Chemistry.
With an intention to boost up the mental health, unity, friendship, teamwork, and the wellbeing of the academic and non-academic staff of the Department, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, we the Department of Chemistry will commence a monthly event named “ආකලන”.

The new state-of the art “Sedimentology Research Laboratory” of the Department of Geology was declared Open by the Vice Chancellor, University of Peradeniya Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake on 30th July, 2021. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Parakrama Karunaratne, The Dean – Faculty of Science, Prof. Saluka Kodituwakku, The Director-OTS, Prof. Ruwan Jayasinghe, The Heads of the Departments of the Faculty of Science and the Academic and Non-academic staff members of the Faculty of Science were participated at the opening ceremony. The newly established Research laboratory is equipped with modern laboratory instruments worth around Rs. 25 million rupees and the project was funded by the Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) Operation of the Ministry of Higher Education funded by the World Bank.
With an intention to help our students identify the SCIENTIST in them, we, the Department of Chemistry, University of Peradeniya will commence a departmental seminar series named " INSPIRE" inviting renowned academics and researchers to share their knowledge, expertise, and experience with the students of the Department of Chemistry/Faculty of Science.
The first half of this new seminar series will feature webinars/seminars from senior academic staff members and emeritus professors from the Department of Chemistry to recognize the valuable contributions they’ve made to our department, university, and the world of science.
The rest of the seminar series will include webinars/seminars from invited speakers from all over the world from renowned academic and research institutions/industries, to explore their research and expertise with our students and staff. This will be a great opportunity for our students to get exposure and insight into world-class research culture. This will also allow our students to make connections with the academic/research leaders, which will surely benefit them when they apply for higher studies.

An Environmentally-friendly, bio-degradable, low-cost and re-usable face mask to repel and destroy any aerosol particles containing the virus, blood or any other water-based stains has been developed by a team headed by Prof. RMG Rajapakse, Senior Professor, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya. This is the first-time global invention of a face mask having these multifunctionalities.
Dr. Chaminda Herath, Consultant in Radiology and Technology of University of Peradeniya, Gayan Tilakaratne Postgraduate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and Niroshan Samarasinghe, the Microanalyst and a Technical Officer at the department of Zoology of the Faculty of Science were the other members of the team.
With the great assistance and the advices of the Honourable Minister of Trade, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, the team was able to find Sarasavi Industries Pvt. Ltd. for mass production of the face masks. University of Peradeniya owns patent rights and has signed an MoU with Sarasavi Industries Pvt. Ltd. for manufacturing.
The coating suspension is prepared at the Isabella Group of Companies and fabric coating is done at the Lumiere Textiles Ltd. This is the first time any invention made from University of Peradeniya has been converted into a commercial product with the assistance provided by the Ministry of Trade.
Dr. H.A.C.K. Ariyarathna was among the 23 women scientists from the developing world who were selected as the 2020 OWSD Early Career Fellows. The Early Career fellows were selected from a competitive pool of candidates based on the strength of their research proposals and their proven scientific excellence as well as leadership skills.Read More
