This course is conducted for the undergraduates of the Faculty of Science prior to the commencement of academic courses. The course is aimed at developing four essential language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking of the new entrants to begin their academic activities in the English medium with confidence and ease. It is specially designed to achieve UTEL level 4. At the end of the course, a Variety Entertainment, which showcases the talents and enhances the soft skills of the students, is held with the participation of the entire batch.

Course Components:
Listening - Basic techniques of grasping information from a spoken text, identifying key ideas in a short academic text, listening for specific information, listening to mini lectures on familiar topics and taking down notes
Reading - Identifying the main idea and supporting details of a short text, reading for gist and details to answer questions, use of contextual, structural and morphological clues to deduce meaning of unfamiliar words, understanding the function of basic punctuations in a text, use of prefixes and suffixes, use of reference markers, surveying a text book, scanning and skimming for specific information
Grammar & Writing – Introduction to parts of speech, simple sentence structures, use of adverbials, articles and prepositions, basic tenses, writing simple scientific descriptions
Speech – Making self-introductions, communicating personal information with peers, group discussions and delivering short speeches on familiar topics
