Physics is the most fundamental branch of science. Our mission is to impart this fundamental knowledge to our undergraduates and postgraduates so that they are equipped with strong foundation to embark on a career of their choice to serve the society.

The Department of Physics is in the forefront of physics education and research in Sri Lanka since its inception in 1961. The Department is offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses covering a broad spectrum of topics in Physics and provides a dynamic and diverse learning environment. The courses are designed to impart sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Driven by a close-knit of academics and researchers, the students in our department receive a rewarding academic experience.

The teaching and learning is facilitated by spacious lecture theaters, well equipped laboratories and other amenities housed in the old iconic building and the adjoining new building. Our graduates are well equipped with a strong foundation to pursue their careers as burgeoning scientists or any career of their choice contributing to the betterment of society. Over the years the Department has produced thousands of graduates who are well recognized and employed all over the world.

The Department is locally and internationally recognized for its research capabilities and professional services. Our core research areas followed by its vibrant community in Solid State Physics (which includes Ionic Materials, Ceramics, Polymers, Semiconductors, the main Materials for Solar Cells, Batteries and Supercapacitors), Nuclear and Particle Physics, Medical and Biophysics, Computational Physics, Atmospheric Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics and Nanoscience provide wide range of opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research in Physics and multidisciplinary areas.

Currently, the staff of the Department consists of a well-qualified permanent teaching faculty (all lecturers holding Ph.D.s), and a temporary teaching staff (graduate teaching assistants) who are serving as tutors and demonstrators. They are reinforced by experienced technical and support staff.
