About Me

I obtained my BSc honours degree in Geology from the University of Peradeniya, and the MSc degree from Shimane University, Japan. In 1999, I received my PhD degree from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany with an excellent pass. After returning to Sri Lanka, I joined the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer and in 2002 joined the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. In 2008, I was granted a merit promotion to Professor in Geology and in 2016, I was promoted to the position of Senior Professor in Geology. I also served as the Head of the Department for 3 years (2016-19) and in many University committees. In 2006 and 2019, I was awarded Research Fellowships from the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation for a research stay in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2013, based on my outstanding academic performance, the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka conferred upon me, the Fellowship of the Academy. I also received many awards from the President of Sri Lanka including the National Awards for Science & Technology Achievements for Excellence in international collaboration for the advancement of Science & Technology (2018), and Committee of Vice-chancellors and Directors (CVCD) Excellence award -Most Outstanding Senior Researcher in Sri Lanka (2018) in the field of Physical Sciences which is the highest award that can be obtained by an academic in Sri Lanka. In 2016, I  was awarded  the prestigious Ananda Coomaraswamy Medal by the Geological Society of Sri Lanka for my contributions to the advancement of the Geology of Sri Lanka.
