The Collaborative Research Laboratory QBITS is launched at University of Peradeniya

The new collaborative research laboratory QBITS was declared open at the Faculty of Science on 8th of June 2018 by Prof. Upul B.Dissanayake,Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya along with Dr. Harsha Subashinghe, the CEO of CodeGen Lanka Ltd. , Prof. S.R. Kodituwakku, Dean, Faculty of Science, and Prof. Y.P.R.D. Yapa the Director of the Science Industry Interaction Cell. The event was attended by many distinguished guests, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, Directors of Units and Centers, Staff members of CodeGen, academic/non-academic members and students of the University.  

This new laboratory is setup as a public-private partnership between the University and CodeGen Lanka Ltd and is expected to undertake research and development projects in novel technologies including nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, power storage etc. The main focus of this laboratory is to develop solutions that address real world problems, by harnessing cutting edge technologies of the future. Projects will be selected based on relevance to the industry, its lifecycle and the industry needs and they are jointly supervised by the University Professors and CodeGen’s core team headed by Dr. Subasinghe, All the projects are fully funded by CodeGen. 

After the opening ceremony, progress of the ongoing research projects carried out in collaboration with CodeGen, were presented by Prof. H.M.N. Bandara, Dr. Sanjeewa Maithreepala and Dr. Ruwan Nawarathna. 

“What we innovate today at QBITS labs, will significantly transform and facilitate many spheres of the consumer life. It’s not about how much of profit you make, but the value of your innovation or the company that matters, and this is why we should continuously design solutions and products where the IPR is of very high commercial value. How we harness these technologies, and the day we decide to take risks as a nation, will be our strength in an era where the technological landscape can shift overnight in real-time,” stated Dr. Harsha Subasinghe. 

The Vice Chancellor Professor Upul B. Dissanayake in his speech noted: “Venturing out into Public-Private Partnership with industry experts, is the only way to ensure that the higher education sector in Sri Lanka contributes to the National Development in a substantial way. QBITS Innovation Lab at the University of Peradeniya, launched in collaboration with CodeGen, will revitalize Sri Lanka’s higher education system, at a juncture where industry expertise is required to test practicality as well as marketability of the innovation. In the long run, this too will assist Universities to enhance its accreditation globally”. 

All the researches of the University are invited to collaborate with this facility to scale up their innovations to industrial and product development level. This is a pioneering effort to promote involvement of private sector to collaborate with the University to strengthen the Sri Lankan economy through state of the art industrial innovations and product development.

Saving the Next Generation - First Census


Saving the Next Generation: Restoration of lower montane forests at Knuckles Forest Reserve (First Census)

First census of the seedling transplants was conducted by the Botanical Society of the University of Peradeniya on 28th April 2018. Twelve members of the Society measured 1200 seedlings transplanted into degraded grasslands at Knuckles Forest Reserve.

Ninety three percent survival of plants were recorded after 4 months of transplantation. This program is a united effort of the University of Peradeniya, Noritake Lanka Porcelain (Pvt) Ltd., Forest Department and
the local villagers to restore lower montane forests at Knuckles Conservation Area.

The new entrants for the academic year 2015/2016


The new entrants for the academic year 2015/2016 of Faculty of Science will be enrolled on 4th of January 2016.

  • An orientation programme will be conducted for four weeks for them. This programme comprises lectures by officers of the University, senior academic staff members, other guest speakers from industry and eminent alumni of the University.

  • Chief Medical Officer, Librarian and Director of Physical Education will address the new entrants making them aware of the facilities available at the University for their professional development. 

  • University Proctor will emphasize on the rules & regulations and student By-Laws of the University. 

  • There will be a programme to make students aware of the student counseling service available at the University. 

  • Student societies will be introduced to new students as participation at society activities will make student enriched with soft skills such as communication skills, team work and collaboration, interpersonal skills, leadership and flexibility. 

  • During this period, English and other foundation courses (Biology for Physical Science students and Mathematics for Biological Science students) will be conducted and they will be continued during the first semester. All students will also be following a basic course in Computer Science.
