Career Guidance Workshop for Final year Peradeniya Undergrads


A successful Career Guidance 1-day workshop on “Positive Thinking and Personal Development” for Final year Science Faculty undergraduates was held on October 21 at the Chemistry auditorium of the University of Peradeniya (UoP).

This was jointly organised by the Alumni Association of University of Peradeniya (AAUP) and the AAUP Colombo Chapter (AAUPCC). 

Prof A.D.L. Chandani Perera delivered the ‘Welcome” address. UoP Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof S.H.P.P Karunaratne and Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof Saluka Kodithuwakku highlighted the importance of CG workshops of this nature to improve soft skills of students and thanked both the AAUP and AAUPCC for organizing it. AAUP members and the AAUPC General Secretary Priyath Cabral and Treasurer Akmeemana participated.

The Resources personnel were Nivantha Kanuwana and V. Abeysinghe. The following topics were addressed in their presentation. How to brand yourself in the job market, interview facing skills, dining etiquette, innovation, creative thinking and stress management with music therapy. According to the feedback and comments, it was understood that the audience considered the training programme to be useful and of immense value for future job prospects. 

The participants were awarded certificates. The programme was organized by the AAUPCC Chairperson of Student Welfare, Mrs. Sujatha Karunaratne, and coordinated by Prof Chandani Perera of AAUP.

Saving the Next Generation: Restoration of degraded sites at the Knuckles Forest Reserve FIELD VISIT


An awareness program for local villagers about the reforestation program was conducted at the Malakotuwa Sri Sumana Maha Vidyalaya on the 14th of July 2018. Mr. B.G. Chandrarathne Bandara (Principal of the school), Dr. Thilanka Gunaratne (University of Peradeniya), Mr. Ananda Subasinghe (Noritake Porcelain (Pvt) Ltd and Mr. Kingsley Illukumbura (Forest Department) and Mr. Ruwan Wijerathne (Village Coordinator) spoke about their role in the project. The members of the Botanical society of the University of Peradeniya collected information from villagers on uses of forests, native plants for reforestation, enrichment of home gardens, environmental issues in the area and recommendations in order to address their suggestions/needs in the project.

Short Course on Analysis of Experimental Data: Biological and Medical Applications


First 3-day short course on:

Analysis of Experimental Data: Biological and Medical Applications

organized by the Board of Study in Statistics and Computer Science at PGIS was completed successfully on 27th April, 2011. Initially the target group for the short course was postgraduate research students registered under the PGIS. But, due to very high demand for the course from various other universities and research institutes, the PGIS decided to conduct five consecutive short courses to accommodate all the applicants.  Next four short courses have been scheduled on following dates:

2nd Short Course: 09th, 10th and 11th May, 2011

3rd Short Course: 23rd, 24th and 25th May, 2011

4th Short Course: 30th, 31st May and 1st June, 2011

5th Short Course: 6th, 7th, 8th June, 2011

Further, due to very high demand from the participants, the Board of Study in Statistics and Computer Science at PGIS is planning to organize an Advanced Short Course in Statistical Data Analysis in near future.
