Taking a momentous step towards reducing the environmental footprint of the University of Peradeniya, an awareness program for the Faculty of Science on ISO14001, which helps implement a certification framework for environmental management, was held on 8th June, 2016. This event was organized by the Environmental Management Committee of the Faculty of Science, concentrating on the office bearers of the student societies. Sixty students representing 13 student societies participated in the event: the Geological Society, Mathematical Society, Computer Society, Art Circle, Operations Research Society, Hantana Conservation Society, Computation and Management Society, Chemical Society, Statistical Circle, Botanical Society, University Explorers Club, Molecular Biology Association and Astronomical Society. The opening remarks were delivered by the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Saluka Kodituwakku. Next, Dr. Chamara Jayasundara spoke on ‘Converting the Garden University to a Green University’ followed by Dr. Thilanka Gunaratne discussing the ‘Role of Student Societies in Implementing ISO14001’. Students were given an opportunity to identify the environmental aspects in faculty. Suggestions by students included using social media and posters to educate the university community on ISO14001 and designing an effective plan to monitor environmental impacts in the Faculty.
